Comments regarding Chapter 9

Page history last edited by DrJ 2 yrs ago

Lots of consistent problems in the homework reared their ugly heads:

  1. Not following the rules for appropriate doublings - GROWL!!!!!
    1. ROOT POS TRIADS - almost always should double the . . . [FIB]
    2. 1st INV TRIADS - first try to double the . . . [FIB]; second best option is to double the . . . [FIB] . . . etc.
    3. 2nd INV TRIADS - double the . . . [FIB]
  2. Not including the inversion symbols in your RN analysis (and how can you double the correct triad member w/o considering your inversion?!!)
  3. Leaving out chord members, which really hurts their feelings (and remember that you should save tripled roots for final tonic triad, IF appropriate to the sound you want to create)
  4. Wrong RN analysis.  If you don't have a strong grasp on this by now, you need outside assistance
    1. Tutoring (ask me for recommendations)
    2. Work with a classmate who is doing well in the written theory class
    3. Work with an upper-division student or someone from another 112 section who has a good grasp on things
    4. Investigate internet resources like the Wikipedia figured bass article
    5. Avoiding or ignoring this won't help . . .
  5. General laziness and incomplete work
  6. Not participating in the wiki chapter summary project

Less egregious offenses:

  1. Spacing problems (too much space between one or more upper parts)
  2. Leaping like nuts (nuts=P4+)
  3. Writing the wrong quality chord in your RN analysis (like II instead of ii . . . )
  4. Not using enough stepwise motion

I feel silly asking this, but what does [FIB] stand for?

Fill in the Blank. Not a silly question at all.
